Three Ways to Make Your Website Work Harder

As solopreneurs, small and medium sized business owners we work hard.  But, sometimes we need to work smarter.

One of those work smarter hacks is on our websites.  Our websites can be one of the best sales agents we employ.  And, since we are paying for it, we should utilize it to the fullest.

That is what we are talking about today in our Brand Boost Challenge.  We will explore three ways to make our websites work harder so we don’t have too.

Let’s dive in.

Create Clear Headlines

Customers are visiting your site, but they leave within 20 to 30 seconds.  If they aren’t staying, they are going somewhere else.

Clear, readable headlines help keep customers on your site longer.  A clear headline conveys value immediately.  It states what you do in 10 to 13 words.  Clear headlines don’t use industry jargon, clever or vague wording.

Your website headlines should communicate clearly using active, user-centric languages. A strong headline directly addresses the customers’ pain points or the benefit you offer.

Brand Boost Challenge:

Audit your website headlines.  Remove any vague wording or industry jargon.  Replace those words with active language that is direct and understandable.

Bonus Tip: Only use one H1 headline per page to aid SEO and accessibility

Use Strategic Hierarchy

Hierarchy is the strategic arrangement of elements to guide the user’s eye to the most important information first.  It provides a better user experience by making your copy easier to scan. Strategic hierarchy reduces friction and uncertainty so. customers find the information they need to take the action they want.

Utilizing size, scale, color, contrast, typography, spacing, and scanning patterns users can be directed to the information they want quickly.  Though we want our customers to stay on our websites, we only want them to stay on to find what they need. When customers get lost in too much information, they become overloaded and won’t take action.

Brand Boost Challenge

Audit your website for strong hierarchy. In a friction free customer experience, all pages are within 3 clicks of your homepage.  Each page has consistent headings (h1-H4) ensuring readability.  Every element serves to draw users on a logical flow so they don’t get lost.

Check all navigation menus for clear, concise links to your most important pages.

Bonus Tip: Ensure that your CTA button color clearly signals the importance of content guiding users to take action.

Clarify Your Call-To-Action Buttons

Strong CTAs boost your website conversions.  Users are able to intuitively move toward a specific goal without confusion.  When customers easily move through your site engagement increases.

CTAs that convert tell users exactly what to do next.  The CTA button contains a specific, action-oriented prompt.  When customers take action, those actions drive business growth.

Brand Boost Challenge

Let’s audit your CTA buttons. Ensure each one contains short, benefit-driven copy.  They will be between 2 and 5 words or phrases that convey emotion or urgency.

Each button should visually stand out from the rest of the page using bright colors, bold text and ample whitespace ensuring it doesn’t get lost from the viewers eye.

Bonus Tip: Minimize the number of choices on each page to avoid customer overwhelm.

By creating clear website headlines customers can easily land on your site with trust and assurance of the value you will bring.  As they move through your site the strategic hierarchy will ensure they don’t miss important information.  And finally, when they see your strong CTA they will be ready to take action.
